The Bureau of Engineering was established in 1929 (Ch. 468, Laws, 1929) and replaced the State Department of Engineering (WIHV87-A1266). In 1959, the bureau was placed under the Department of Administration. It was merged with several other units in 1971 to create the Bureau of Facilities Management (WIHV85-A777). Horace William Shaler Cleveland was born in 1814 in New England. After spending time in New England, New Jersey and New York working in landscape architecture, Cleveland settled in Chicago in 1869, establishing a landscape architectural firm. In 1886, he moved his firm to Minneapolis. Considered a visionary landscape architect, Cleveland was responsible for the design of the Minneapolis park system.
